U.S. Green Building Council upgrades LEED

Office Depot is opening its first LEED-certified store today.

The 21,000-square-foot, Austin, Texas, store is part of a company-wide push to
buy, sell and build green.

"We took a series of innovative green design elements used in Office Depot store
locations across the country and brought them together in our new store
prototype," Ed Costa, Vice President of Construction for Office Depot, said in a
release. "Through the construction phase of this prototype design we used a wide
range of greener building products and practices.

Among the features on the store are 50 skylights to minimize the need for
artificial lighting, solar panels on the roof providing for part of the store's
electrical needs and an in-store recycling system.
