Napa Valley Wine Train Tests CNG Locomotive
The Napa Valley Wine Train tested its newly refitted Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) locomotive number 71 today. The locomotive departed Napa at 4:00pm and ran tests on a section of track near Yountville until 7:00pm. Locomotive #71 has reduced emissions due to the use of compressed natural gas as a fuel. It also has a newly installed computer controlled fuel injection system designed to fire only a few of the 12 cylinders at a time, which results in an overall energy savings by reducing waste. The locomotive conversion is the culmination of many years of engineering and testing by engineers at the Napa Valley Wine Train, and was accomplished by modifying systems used in stationary power generation facilities.
