The man who changed the desert into paradise
Thursday, January 3, 2008

The following is a translation of an article by Lee Yong Soo:

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE & Ruler of Dubai has provided lessons to several companies and government officials in different parts of the world with his groundbreaking ideas and his hard work.

This is the man who changed the desert into a paradise and who transformed a small city into the biggest commercial hub in the Middle East and a financial centre that hosts international companies; this is a man who has achieved an incredibly high rate of growth, who launches mega projects, who is also a poet and who - most importantly - still has several ideas that he intends to implement.

This Ruler's motto is "Nothing is impossible". It isn't unusual for this man to work from 6am to 2am.

Sheikh Mohammed's official website describes him as a poet who spent his early childhood in the desert as a Bedouin and who writes Nabati poetry.

Many people do not know that the ski slope in the desert and the artificial island that increases the coastline from 70km to 1500 km - the most unique mega projects in the world - existed in this poet's imagination before they existed in real
life. This man is known to be unconventional and believes in teamwork. Experts credit this to his liberal thinking.

The poet's enthusiastic spirit is what leads him to support women; his happiness after women took part in the first elections in the UAE on December 18th was not unexpected because he has been quoted as saying, "Without a woman, there is no soul". This is a strong statement for a leader in a region where there is discrimination against women.
