Congress Approves High-Efficiency Appliance Tax Incentives
Congress has given final approval to tax incentives for manufacturers of
high-efficiency appliances, including water-saving clothes washers and
dishwashers. Section 305 of H.R. 1421, the Emergency Economic
Stabilization Act of 2008, approved by the House of Representatives,
includes incentives for extra-high efficiency clothes washers and dishwashers
produced during the years 2008, 2009, and 2010. This proposal was
supported by appliance manufacturers, water utilities, and efficiency advocates,
who reached agreement on recommendations for incentive amounts and qualifying
efficiency levels in early 2007. Manufacturers will be rewarded for
bringing new models to market that are well above current Energy Star levels of
energy and water efficiency. These products will reduce consumer utility
bills and pave the way for more widespread improvements in appliance efficiency
in the years to come.
